FLORA
variations of flora grow on the island in various zones because of their ability to adapt to their surroundings. The aspects that influence their adaptability such as the soil, access to fresh water, surrounding animals and exposure to the sun,wind, rain ect.
At the foot of the beace grow the tough plants such as; goat’s foot convolvulus. Behind these are heavy wind tolerant plants such as; salt spray. Salt tolerant bush follow as well as trees such as; coastal she-oak. Travel further inland lush flora, grow in the moist, sheltered gorge' and on high, rocky hillsides, with the unique hoop pines scattered through the vegetation. The drier hills, with tougher soil grow large eucalyptus forests and native plains. Bellow this along the shorelines, mangroves flourish. There are many flora unique to Whitehaven such as; Hoop Pines, Eucalyptus, Grasstrees, Mangroves, Orchids, Seagrass and native Hibiscus.
FAUNA
Bird species is plentiful along the shorelines other animals are more scarce. This is due to the isolation which reduces the amount of new fauna being introduced. This is due the last ice age excluding the Whitsunday islands. Animal's found on the shore lines include; kangaroos, wallabies, lace monitor, insects, ospreys, shell fish,flying fox, whales , fish, turtles, dungeon, whales
