Hamilton island is a good place to visit any time of the year, with it's temperatures mild and clear skies throughout the year. Hamilton island is a destination worth visiting from summer to winter with its gentle climate lasting all year round. However, the many unique features of Hamilton island vary depending on the season. the warm climate is a popular destination in demand world wide. Hamilton island lies on the tropic of capricorn, average temperature year round is 27.4 degrees. |
FLORA
Different plants grow on the island in various areas due to their ability to adapt to the surrounding areas. This is influenced by the soil, access to fresh water, surrounding fauna and exposure to the elements. At the foot of the beaches grow tough plants such as; sea bean and spiky spinfex. Behind these are heavy wind tolerant plants such as; shifting sands. Salt tolerant shrubs follow as well as trees such as; octopus bush. While travailing further inland lush vegetation grow in the moist, sheltered gorge' and on high, rugged hillsides, with the unique to Hamilton island hoop pines are scattered through the vegetation. The drier ranges, with deeper soil grow large eucalyptus forests and native grasslands. Bellow this along the shorelines, mangroves flourish. There are many flora unique to Hamilton island such as; Hoop Pines, Eucalyptus, Grasstrees, Mangroves, Orchids, Seagrass and native Hibiscus.
FAUNA
Bird species is plentiful in Hamilton island, other animals are more scarce. This is due to the isolation which reduces the amount of new fauna being introduced. this is because of the last ice age isolating the Whitsunday islands. Animal's found on Hamilton island includes; kangaroos, wallabies, lace monitor, insects, ospreys, shell fish,flying fox, whales , fish, turtles, dungeon, whales
